Urban Ecology is a 45-year-old non-profit dedicated to building more sustainable cities. It was founded in 1975 by visionary architects and activists who believed that cities should serve both people and nature. From the beginning, Urban Ecology’s mission has involved using urban planning, ecology, and public participation to help design and build healthier communities and cities.
While the organization has been on hold for the past decade, its active core members have been working in affordable housing and community design in the Bay Area. Urban Ecology’s vision continues to be to create neighborhoods, cities, and regions that are sustainable, diverse, democratic, socially just, and well balanced.
Urban Ecology’s members are currently involved in projects such as the design of this Lightree affordable housing project in East Palo Alto (2022).
